What does this error message mean? "The shipper cannot use the provided UPS account number as the payment method."

Modified on Fri, Feb 6 at 2:35 PM

The UPS account number is invalid or restricted. The account might be suspended, closed, or inactive. It may not be authorized for third-party shipments or payment responsibilities.

The account has limited access. Some UPS accounts are restricted to only certain addresses or shippers. If you're trying to bill to an account that doesn’t allow outside use, you'll get this error.

Address mismatch

The ship-from address may not match what’s authorized on the UPS account. Some accounts are locked to specific origins (like a warehouse or a corporate location).

Billing settings aren’t set up correctly. UPS allows several billing options (sender, receiver, third-party). If you're billing as a third party but that’s not enabled for the account, you’ll see this error.

How to fix it:

-Double-check the UPS account number for typos or errors.

-Confirm with the account owner that the account is active and able to be used by you

-Confirm with the account owner that the account is enabled for the billing type you're selecting

If you’re using a third-party account, make sure:

-The account allows third-party billing

-The address you’re shipping from matches what’s on file

-Call UPS Customer Support or log in to UPS.com to check account status and billing permissions.
