When you enter an address, ShipLeap Momentum uses the USPS database to verify the address and automatically checks the box if the address is found to be residential. Please keep in mind that the USPS database is not 100% accurate so there may be times that the residential check is not correct.
Each carrier uses this checkbox differently:
UPS: This carrier makes the residential determination on their side. You won't see any change in price when you check or uncheck the residential box.
FEDEX: Checking this box does affect prices for FedEx. We recommend you check this box whenever you are shipping to a residential addresses via FEDEX.
An example would be for FedEx Home Delivery, which is part of the FedEx Ground network. They deliver packages 150 lbs. or less to residences and a $4 residential surcharge is applied per package.
USPS: USPS does their own validation to determine if the address is deliverable. You won't see any change in price when you check or uncheck the residential box. There isn't any difference in fee based on the residential or commercial location status as USPS rates are typically by parcel weight, dimensions and how far the package goes based off specific zoning. You can find more on USPS fees at https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm. Please note that all ShipLeap customers receive commercial plus pricing which is better than retail price, but is not related to the residential or commercial status of the location.
